In January 1999, a SulphCo predecessor company entered into a research agreement with the University of Southern California, engaging Dr. Teh Fu Yen in the development and commercialization of proprietary technology to be utilized for the removal of sulfur from crude oil and petroleum products. This research resulted in the first patent for ultrasound assisted oxidative desulfurization technology, issued to Dr. Yen and subsequently assigned to SulphCo.
From December 2000 through 2006, our principal business activities focused on the research, testing and development of our proprietary ultrasound and oxidative desulfurization technology. During 2006 and 2007, SulphCo constructed 180,000 bbl (barrel) per day of skid-mounted production facilities to prepare for commercialization.
In early 2007, a new executive management team was formed to further develop and commercialize the Sonocracking™ process. Since that time, SulphCo has validated the process on numerous petroleum streams, completed commercial scale field trials at several locations, and in conjunction with OMV Refining & Marketing GmbH under a Technology Agreement, established the commercial viability of the technology for a diesel “finishing” application.
